Is there a way to lighten up dark areolas?

I had a BA in February 2012. I got pregnant and had a child since then. I noticed my areolas have gotten larger and darker and have not gone back to normal. Is there a way to get them to go back lighter? I know they won't go back to its normal shape.

Changes in areola size and color commonly occur with pregnancy and hormone fluctuations. You could try bleaching creams, such as hydroquinone or similar. There are surgical treatments to decrease the size of the areola, but these come with the trade of a scar. You should discuss these options with your plastic surgeon. Best of luck!

Thank you for your question. I would probably refer you to our aestheticians to see if we couldn't lighten the pigment a bit for you. There may be a simple, topical cream that may help. I'd ask your surgeon for recommendations. Best wishes.

Great question. Changes in color and size are quite normal following childbirth. While some changes are easily tolerated, others can be stressful to some women. I would follow up with your surgeon for his/her recommendations on what may be available through his office.  Many plastic surgeons have licensed aestheticians in their offices who have access to topical creams that can lighten skin.
