How can I avoid lymphedema after a Breast reduction?

Question

I want to get a breast reduction but I'm concerned about getting lymphedema. One surgeon I spoke too basically told me it'seems related to cancer, not a reduction, but I've read differently. Can you tell me how to avoid getting lymphedema after a reduction?

Breast reduction and lymphedema are not related.  Lymphedema is related to removal of the lymph nodes that might be involved in cancer.  The removal of the majority of these nodes in the armpit can lead to back up of fluid in the arm (lymphedema).  Breast Reduction does not involve the removal of lymph nodes.

Lymph edema may occur after mastectomy with lymph node dissection but is a possible complication only.IT typically doesnot occur with Breast Reduction surgery.

I personally have not seen lymphedema following breast reduction surgery. It is more common in breast oncology / reconstruction and axillary surgery.

Lymphedema is definitely more common with mastectomies and lymph node surgery. I have not seen it with breast reduction.

I have never heard about lymphoedema after breast reduction surgery.Patients who are at risk of getting lymphoedema have had lymphnodes removed in the course of their treatment of cancer, which is not the procedure you are about to undergo.Carefully discuss your concerns with your surgeon and I am sure they can explain where the lymphnodes in the area are and where the scars and surgery during your operation is situatedGood luck

I am not going to say that it is not possible to get lymphedema after a breast reduction, but I have never heard of lymphedema as a complication of the surgery.  I do not think you need to worry about this.
