any surgeyr puts a patient at risk for blood clots that can cause strokes. this is very rare. I suggest you see an expert. Best, Dr. Emer.
Stroke is a possible complication of any type of surgery which requires anesthesia. The risk of a stroke is minimized by a proper physical examination and medical clearance before your surgery. You should be screened for any risk factors and then be treated for any medical issues prior to having elective surgery such as thigh liposuction. After the surgery, you will be given instructions on how to minimize blood clots which can also cause strokes. Because people are routinely screened for their risk of stroke prior to surgery, the risk of stroke for someone who has undergone elective cosmetic surgery by a board-certified plastic surgeon is extremely rare. You can discuss this with your plastic surgeon and the performing anesthesiologist so you can make an informed decision. Hope this helps!Johnson C. The short answer is yes but an extremely rare event I’m sure. A fat embolism through a patent foramen ovale could theoretically happen. Or small blood clot, too. Without more information only theoretical answers are possible. If you think you are having a stroke, call 911.
