I am 28 years old male, I developed varicose veins. No one in my immediate family has this problem. I was told that prolonged standing and sitting can be the root of the problem. I am given two treatment options: EVLT and Sclerotherapy. Question I have is that, once the saphenous vein is closed off by EVLT, how does the blood pump back to the heart? Is it safe for the long run in terms of circulation? Thanks

Answer: Varicose vein treatment. The gold standard for treatment of varicose veins due to saphenous vein reflux is a closure procedure. There are 3 levels of veins in your leg, superficial, connecting and deep. The saphenous vein is in the superficial system so once this is closed blood will return to the heart through the other two systems.

Answer: EVLT safety EVLT is a very safe procedure. 98% closure of the great saphenous vein is achieved at one year as confirmed by an ultrasound. Small risk of a deep venous thrombosis (DVT) needing a blood thinner. The deep system of veins is responsible for taking the majority of blood back up to the heart. EVLT should treat a diseased vein, one that does not efficiently return blood back up to the groin area so occluding or closing the vein should improve your venous return and not impede it. EVLT should be offered for symptomatic patients and not varicose veins without symptoms.
