I am 29 y/o and have hereditary thin hair . My scalp shows through in tight ponytails and if i do partition , there is quite a wide partition. Can i get SMP done? I have never heard much about it. Whats the treatment like? Does it have any side effects, short term or long term?How is the recovery like?

Scalp MicroPigmentation is a great alternative for those hair transplant surgery may not be an option.  SMP can work to diminish the contrast between dark hair and fair skin.Many women with thinning hair have SMP.

By peppering the scalp with micro-pigments a significant amount of camouflaging can be achieved which can significantly improve ones cosmetic appearance.  The effect is essentially one of shading.  By decreasing the contrast between the hairs and the scalp, the visual appearance of greater density is achieved.

SMP is great for adding a look of density to thinning hair, as a camouflage option.  However you would really need to be seen for an in person evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate.  For density coverage, you need to have enough hair to cover the dots placed, as well as have stable hair loss (meaning not expecting to lose significantly more in the few years after having it done).  So an in person evaluation is best to determine if it's right for you - but generally speaking it is a great technique to add a look of density.  Good luck!
