I've been wearing my faja for about a month now. I'm currently in my stage two. It's a medium (I started in a large), and I'm already on my 3rd hook. I'm a little unsure if I have the right fit or if it's working at the pace it's supposed to remove my swelling. My question is would my swelling go down with or without compression? Even if it takes longer? Want to make sure that when I stop wearing it I won't stay swollen.
Answer: The role of the faja. Thank you for your question. I have my patients wear a compression garment (faja) covering all treated 24/7 except to shower for 4 weeks post op. This helps ontrol swelling as the compression on your tissues helps your body to reabsorb the edema fluid that accumulates in the tissues after any procedure. This can take quite some time to happen without help from the compression garments. It also helps improve contour. Compression helps to keep the tissues adherent to the underlying structures while healing, this can help prevent the wrinkled skin appearance that can happen when the tissues heal in ways we don't want them to. However, if you garments are too tight they can restrict lymphatic drainage and blood flow leading to more swelling and complications. I'd suggest you contact your surgeon's office regarding your plan. Best of luck!

Answer: Role of the faja Recommend that you follow the instructions provided by your plastic surgeon as he/she is most familiar with the details of your surgery and how you are progressing through your recovery. I use a compression garment with three bands that can be serially tightened and loosened as swelling subsides. The most important aspects of compression wear are snug fit and that all liposuctioned areas are being compressed.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Swelling and garments In my opinion the garment is for comfort, long term, swelling will gradually go away. The garment does not facilitate it.

Answer: Will the swelling go down with or without compression? Thank you for your question. It is important that you follow your surgeons post-op care protocols, they are in place for a reason. The swelling will go down faster with compression. I advise my patients to wear their compression for a minimum 6 weeks. Your compression should be tight and not loose and should be covering all areas that were operated on. Yes, your swelling will go down with or without compression, but will take longer without. If you stop wearing your garment you tend to swell more. There can be complications that can arise if there is too much swelling. Recovery period is a time where patients need to be patient. Best advise is to continue your compression just as your doctor has ordered. Best wishes.

Answer: How long should compression garments be worn? Hi and welcome to our forum! The compression garment is primarily worn to prevent postoperative bleeding and to control swelling. In our practice, we recommend a compression garment be worn for a period of four weeks after which time these complications are quite rare. The effect of "shaping" has more to do with the surgery itself than the wearing of an uncomfortable garment. Longer periods of compression may be recommended in unusual situations if there is a collection of fluid in the soft tissues (seroma). I recommend that you speak directly to your plastic surgeon regarding this issue as he / she is familiar with your situation. Different surgeons may have different opinions. Best wishes!
