Five months ago a I surgeon removed an ear graft and I suspect an entire upper lateral cartilage that it was on top of. Ear graft was in my medial crus. I can actually reach my finger into my nostril & feel the very painful place he cut it out. The problem is not swelling. With time, painful changes in breathing, taste, & nasal/throat/mouth dryness have worsened. The left side of the nose is collapsed against my bone. What do I do now?
Answer: Revision rhinoplasty for airway collapse It sounds as if you might need cartilage replacement to correct what is typically referred to as nasal valve collapse which may be both internal (on the inside) and external (on the outside). This surgery should help to restore both function and form to your nose. I would suggest you consult with a board certified facial plastic surgeon in your area with expertise in both internal and external nasal anatomy. Good luck in your area.

Answer: In rhinoplasty, a surgeon removed my entire left upper lateral cartilage. What do I do now? Overresected nose At the 5 month mark you are still in the healing process, but you should really express your concerns to your surgeon as they are best able to assist you since they know exactly what was done. If you do ultimately need revision surgery, you will need to wait at least 7 months before proceeding anyway. If that's the case, be sure to see a Rhinoplasty specialist, whether it's Plastic Surgeon or a Facial Plastic Surgeon. Best of luck.

Answer: Overresected nose Unfortunately, it is difficult to fully offer you options without photos. If the problem were just contour irregularities, dermal fillers can be used to correct them. It sounds like you have functional issues as well, which means that revision rhinoplasty would be the only option. Relay your concerns to your surgeon, or if you don't feel comfortable, I would consult with a Board-Certified plastic surgeon who will thoroughly examine your nose, review your operative reports, and formulate a plan tailored to your needs. Best wishes!

Answer: What do I do now? Dear littlemissperfectI think you are much better off going in for a follow up and asking the surgeon to review what was done, show him your problem area(s) and then have a more fair understanding of where you are. Once you know that, you can decide whats your next best step. It would be unusual for a surgeon to do things without a reason and with more information, you can make a good choice for your next move.Even if you want to go for a second opinion, the information from a follow up can help you get a better outcome.

Answer: Overresected nose You will need a reconstructive procedure to build structure into your nose to open up the collapsed area and restore your breathing. To rebuild where the upper lateral cartilage was removed, your surgeon will need to use ear cartilage from your conchal bowl. It works quite well. In the meanwhile, using nasal saline spray will be helpful for the drying. You should go visit with a rhinoplasty surgeon experienced in revisions. Good luck!
