I had a rhinoplasty about 4 years ago and I have developed a noticeable hump on the right side (looks like swelling causing my nose to appear crooked)due to a subcutaneous scar. My surgeon wants to perform a small procedure in which he will carve away the scar tissue. I am nervous that this surgery will result in another scar. Also, what is the typical healing process on a procedure such as this?
Answer: Scarring Hump After Rhinoplasty It is not uncommon to see some dorsal fullness in the nose, it can be attributed to scar tissue. The hump can be removed in a simple operative procedure under local to take down the scarring. The recovery time is usually 5-7 days. This should be done in the hands of a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon or Otolaryngologist with expertise in Rhinoplasty.

Answer: Scar after rhinoplasty causing a hump Dear Bambibrit,If the hump feels very hard, it is likely bone that will be shaved awayDuring rhinoplasty and the shaving of a bump, occasionally the bone dust left over can cause a hump to returnIf it is scar tissue, it is a little bit softer, this can also be smoothed over with a small procedure, especially if steroid injections do not workIt sounds like a conservative procedure and you shouldn't have to worry too muchBest regards,Dr. Nima

Answer: Bump After Rhinoplasty Hello,Although you haven't provided photos, what you're describing sounds like protruding bone, not scaring. It is common to have 'step off' issues in the area where the cartilage meets the bone on the side of your nose. This typically gives the appearance of a residual bump on the 3/4 view (what most people call a side view when looking at themselves in the bathroom mirror), and makes their nose look crooked on the front view. The cause of this problem is commonly collapse of the cartilage away from the bone. Fixing the problem is rarely a simple filing down the bony bump. More commonly, the side wall cartilage needs a 'spreader' graft to re-support it flush against the bone again. Please submit photos or better yet, go on a few second opinion consults with experienced rhinoplasty surgeons. Best of luck!

Answer: Subcutaneous scarring after rhinoplasty Although technically you are correct, scar is replaced with scar after surgery, many times we are able to improve thickened scar tissue by removing or revising it. Without photos, it is a little difficult to offer you the available options. I would relay your concerns to your surgeon, as they will be able to reassure you and explain the reasoning behind their selected plan. Best wishes!
