Can Refyne (Restylane) be used to add volume to the buccal areas and submalar triangle regions?

Thank you for your question. I believe there are better filler choices for adding volume, although Refyne can be a good option for some patients. Defyne is more robust, as is Voluma or Lyft. I also use Sculptra or Radiesse for adding volume as these tend to produce some natural, long-lasting results. The key to a successful treatment is to select a very experienced, board-certified injector who has the expertise to choose the filler that will meet your needs and goals best. With a qualified provider, you should see a very good result, no matter which product is used.

It certainly is not unreasonable to place Restylane Refyne in the cheek region, although for more volume, Juvederm Voluma, Restylane Lyft, or Sculptra would probably be better choices as they provide more volume.  Lyft and Voluma have the advantage of immediate results and reversibility, while Sculptra will last the longest once a result is achieved.  Best wishes.

There are a variety of other treatment options to address the cheeks including Voluma, Defyne, Restylane Lyft, and Radiesse, depending on the nature and area of volume loss. Thank you for your question about injectable fillers.  As you have mentioned, there are many different products that are appropriate for different areas of the face.  Restylane Refyne and Juvederm Vollure are great products to use in the nasolabial folds, tear troughs (under the eyes) and around the mouth.  Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lift are better used in the cheek area and jawline.  Finding the right injector is just as important as choosing the correct product.

Refyne is not always the right choice to add volume. I would more likely use Defyne for adding volume in areas of movement. Volume in the buccal area can lead to an abnormal look. Adding volume in this area can sometimes take a lot of product and injecting Refyne in the dermis is sometimes done. In the submalar region, any high G prime filler will do: Restylane, Lyft, Defyne. If should be injected deeply in the submalar area.

Restylane Refyne and Defyne are great for areas such as the nasal labial folds and areas around the mouth because it is more elastic which allows for the filler to be able to really get into those areas of volume loss and to last longer than other fillers that are not as "stretchy" in a sense. In order to add fullness to the cheek area, I would suggest using Sculptra. It is great for adding volume to the face and correcting hollowness. For large volume in the buccal area you will do well with fillers like Juvederm Ultra or Ultra plus.  Another option is Radiesse.  Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft are typically better for the malar cheek area.  You asked about Restylane Refyne and Defyne.  Those are great for under the eyes, lips and fine lines.  There's an art to injectables and it's very important to be specific with what gets injected where.   Great question!   Dr. Onir
