Husband on 1mg finasteride, this year restarted for 6 months daily. Can he continue taking it every other day instead of daily?

Studies have shown that a single dose of finasteride can suppress DHT for 7 days. It must be  .5 milligrams or higher to work. By the way, greater than 5 mg is of no extra benefit. I encourage you to read about post finasteride syndrome. The drug is excellent, although there is a potential for side effects that should be understood.Hope this. Good luck!

My first question is why are you wanting to do this?The product is most effective by taking 1 mg everyday.I would suggest getting some advice from the MD that prescribe the med to you since they know your history the best.

It is always a good idea to speak to your doctor before changing your medication regimen.  Propecia is a medication you need to take daily.  

Studies have not been done. Anecdotal reports would suggest that it is probably close but these studies have not been done. Finasteride is FDA approved for 1 mg daily. Any other uses are 'off label' and one should check with a physician for full review before proceeding down this path.

You can use this drug at half the dose by taking 1 mg every other day. It will be 80% as effective at half the dose. 

The FDA has cleared finesteride 1mg for male pattern alopecia to be taken once daily.  However,  finesteride blocks the 5ar enzyme permanently. It takes 6 hours for the blood levels of finesteride to reduce by half but it takes over a month for a new 5ar to be produced.  Therefore,  I have some patients who experience side effects from finesteride to reduce the frequency of dosage.  Some of my patients take finesteride every other day and still experience hair regrowth.
