Earlobes naturally very big and circular, protrude to the sides, and are very thick. Best procedure? (photos)

Earlobe surgery is composed of several techniques that can either repair torn earlobes (split earlobes) or correct overly redundant earlobe tissue from piercings or genetics or stretching. Our HIDEF earlobe repair includes a recontouring of the earlobe contour using multilayered sutures to reapproximate the curvature of the earlobe; while simultaneously restoring contour to the ear. In patients with pixie ears after facelift surgery, an alternate technique is used to reduce the dependance of the earlobe on the facelift flap. Facelift surgery can reshape the earlobe and this requires restoration. Sutures are usually taken out within 10 days and the wound is repierced in 4-6 weeks thereafter. Keloid scars must be addressed in patients with known history for scarring.

I can certainly see what you want done with the earlobes. I would cut out skin from the backside if the lobe in order to roll it back closer to your cheek.   The scars would be behind the earlobes so as to not be visible. Finding the right doctor and the right price can take some looking around. I would estimate total cost to be around $2000

Hello and thank you for your question.  The best advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation.  Based on your photographs, you are a great candidate for an ear lobule reduction.  This decision should be based on a detailed discussion with equal input from both you and your surgeon.   Make sure you specifically look at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results.

Thank you for sharing your photos and for your question. Enlarged or prominent earlobes can often impact a person’s self-esteem. Fortunately, it is possible to reduce enlarged or prominent earlobes under local anesthesia using refined techniques. It's important to consult a fully-trained plastic surgeon who can examine you and discuss your options with you.

A surgery like this can be performed under local anesthesia and should cost between $2000-$3000.  Now, the surgery itself.  It's important to know that there are several ways to make an ear lobe smaller.  In your case it's no just making it smaller but also reduction the lateral flare or rotation of your ear lobe.  In fact, you don't have a large ear lobe.  It just has a healthy amount of fat and collagenous tissue that gives it that flared look AND it's supported by a small bit of cartilage.  If you touch the ear lobe you'll feel a little bit of cartilage projection out laterally.  So you can't do a traditional wedge or crescent excision.  You'd need an incision from the inner aspect of the lobe and trim and weaken that piece of cartilage.  If your surgeon simply removes the soft tissue it will leave the ear lobe with the same general look AND possibly cause the ear lobe to look scared and shriveled a bit.Best of luckChase Lay MD
