A lot of doctors seem to have little experienced to sewing stretched lobes because when I go on their websites and view the gallery there are barely ever any photos of this procedure. I’m looking for a doctor with experience of course. I live close to Pittsburgh PA

Stretched earlobes are difficult due to the thin nature of the tissue and loss of elasticity. This will often require a tissue rearrangement or other minor tweaks to the procedure to achieve optimal results. I would make sure to choose a board certified plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon to ensure they are adequately trained to give you the results that you will want.

Hello. You can have your earlobes repaired. Most plastic surgeons do this procedure in the office. The cost is approximately $500 to $100 per ear. This procedure can fix a split lobe or stretched and enlarged piercing holes. After you are fully healed from the procedure you can have your earlobes re-pierced.

Earlobe surgery is composed of several techniques that can either repair torn earlobes (split earlobes) or correct overly redundant earlobe tissue from piercings or genetics or stretching. Our HIDEF earlobe repair includes a recontouring of the earlobe contour using multilayered sutures to reapproximate the curvature of the earlobe; while simultaneously restoring contour to the ear. In patients with pixie ears after facelift surgery, an alternate technique is used to reduce the dependance of the earlobe on the facelift flap. Facelift surgery can reshape the earlobe and this requires restoration. Sutures are usually taken out within 10 days and the wound is repierced in 4-6 weeks thereafter. Keloid scars must be addressed in patients with known history for scarring.

Thank you for your question, and your photo.  We have been seeing quite a few of these in the office.  We can usually do this procedure in the office under local anesthesia.  The patient returns to the office a week later for suture removal.  The costs will vary geographically.  Best to see a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon or Otolaryngologist, (ENT).  They will evaluate your individual situation, and together you will make a plan.  The individual office may have payment plans, (i.e. CareCredit, etc.).

Dear Emilyteresi,  Thank you for your question. You are correct that the experience with this type of surgery varies amongst providers. A torn earlobe is way different than a stretched earlobe in the repair it requires. It is still a common performed procedure, under local anesthesia in the office. I do recommend you being seen by a board certified surgeon to discuss your options. Repairing stretched earlobes is a fairly common procedure that I think most facial plastic surgeons and plastic surgeons would perform.  Not having pictures of the procedure on a website does not necessarily mean the doctor does not perform the procedure.  I would seek out a facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon in your area.

Call around your area and find out who has done many of these and the prices.  You will actually find that surgeons whose prices are reasonable do far more of these than those who charge a lot and so the cheaper surgeons may have more experience.  I decided long ago to keep my prices affordable to help out those looking to go into the military or police.  I charge $800 a pair.  Because of this I have done over 300 sets of earlobe gauges, so call around and compare.

I would recommend seeing a plastic surgeon who does have experience repairing stretched earlobes such as yours. The repair of earlobes like yours differs from the repair of a simple torn or stretched piercing. In cases such as yours some tissue often needs to be removed in both the horizontal and vertical vectors in order to result in a natural appearing earlobe shape. Otherwise, it is possible to end up with a long or pointed appearing earlobe. In Seattle, we see lots of patients with large stretched earlobes who desire repair.  In your community, it may be best to call around to several plastic surgeons' offices and inquire about their experience with these repairs, prior to making an appointment. Thanks for sharing, and best of luck to you!
