Will taking an antipsychotic drug effect anesthesia?

Question

Hi I am currently taking .5 mg of respridone every night and my breast aug is schedule for Wednesday the 16th. I'm wondering if stopping it 2 days before would be good enough? I'm not even sure if taking respridone effects anesthesia? Is it okay to continue taking? Or would I need to wait longer for my procedure? I've been taking .5 for aprox a year

should definitely not taper off any antipsychotic drugs without direct
communication and direction from your prescribing physician. Talk this over
with your plastic surgeons as well.

I don't think there will be any problem taking risperidone and having a breast augmentation. The anesthesiologist will need to know about this but I don't see why you would be asked to stop.

You should probably let your surgeon know in advance that you are prescribed respridone to be able to determine if you should continue to take it or not before your surgery

You should be fine to take resperidone up to the time of your surgery.  Just keep in mind that in some patients it can depress the central nervous system with more intensity than usual after surgery.  Your best bet is to make you mention this to your plastic surgeon and the anesthesiologist.  Hope this helpsGood luckDr VasishtSouth Shore Plastic Surgery

Thank you for your question. In general antipsychotic medications can be continued up through surgery without added risk.  That said it would be wise to discuss your medication use with your surgeon and anesthesiologist as they can offer you the best advice based on your procedure.

In my experience, not only do antipsychotic drugs not affect surgery, but your particular antipsychotic drug would be better to take before surgery so that everything can stay stable throughout the surgery. Of course you should not rely on my advice here, but should discuss this fully with your own doctor.

Thank you for your question.You need to let your surgeon know that you are taking this medication and follow his/her recommendation regarding when to stop prior to surgery.  The sooner you let  your surgeon know, the better.Best wishes.

It is always a good idea to review your meds with your surgeon and your anesthesiologist. The anesthesiologist will make recommendations based upon your list.

Hopefully, you have already mentioned all drugs you are currently taking, as well as possible cigarette and alcohol use, to your plastic surgeon. The medication should be discussed with the anesthesiologist in advance of your surgery.
