Is an Anticoagulant after breast lift with implants surgery recommended?

Question

Do you recommend an anticoagulant for preventing blood clots to be administered after a breast lift with augmentation surgery? I have no blood clotting disorder what so ever, just want to be on the safe side. Thank you! :)

All surgical procedures carry some degree of risk. Occasionally, minor complications occur and
do not affect the surgical outcome. Major complications associated with this
procedure are rare, so your worry for clotting should be minimal. The suitability of the breast lift procedure and specific
risks may be determined during your consultation, and your specific questions regarding clotting can be addressed during consultation so they will know whether this prescription would be helpful post-op.

This is really just a matter of balancing risks and benefits of the anticoagulant.  If you are a higher risk patient based upon your risk factors for DVT, then anticoagaulant may be considered.  If you are low risk, then anticoagulant is probably not a good idea as anticoagulant use has risks of its own.  This is a far more complicated issue, and your plastic surgeon should be very knowledgeable about the risks for DVT and how to manage these risks.Kenneth Hughes, MDLos Angeles, CA

I would not recommend an anticoagulant after a breast lift unless you had a known blood clotting disorder.  Using one will increase your risk of bleeding and other complications.  To minimize the risk of developing a blood clot, I recommend my patients are aggressive about walking the same day as their surgery was performed as opposed to adding blood thinners.  Best of luck.

The American Society of Plastic
Surgeons has published strategies for thromboembolism prevention, which allow
the surgeon to assess a risk factor score for each patient.  Based on that score, the need for pharmacologic
anticoagulation can be made.  At a
minimum, sequential compression devices placed on the legs provide reasonable
mechanical prophylaxis for the majority of patients.

Google the Caprini scale and ASPS ( American Society of Plastic Surgeons) . There is a good set of guidelines for prophylaxis based upon a point system.  You shouldn't need it if you're healthy and I think it increases the risk of bleeding problems.

There needs to be specific indications for someone to go on an anticoagulation protocol after surgery  that is based on risk factors and recommendations of a hematologist.   Anticoagulants are used when necessary.

Generally speaking, unless you have a history of blood clots or a risk of them you do not need to take an anticoagulant. If anything, it is recommended to avoid any medications that increase the risk of bleeding--advil, aspirin, vitamin E, many herbal supplements, etc.  Typically most surgeons and surgery centers will place sequential compression boots on your legs during the surgery to decrease the risk of blood clots. Additionally, it is very important that even the first day after surgery you are up and walking several times per day to keep the blood moving in your legs.
