Worried I scratched off a melanoma and it is under the scar now (Photo)

Question

About 1 year ago I noticed the spot in the picture which is located on my right arm. After scratching/picking it off it healed pretty nicely. Only a very light brown mark is still visible. I am worried I scratched off a melanoma. If it is a melanoma, would it have grown back on the surface?

Hi! Any time a skin lesion persists or changes over time could be worrisome for a skin cancer. The only way to know for sure is to biopsy it. Melanoma can present in a variety of ways. Generally we refer to the abcde’s of melanoma asymmetry, borders irregular, color, diameter over 6mm, evolving or changing over time. These are guidelines that we use to determine if a biopsy is warranted. We need to get a biopsy deep enough to see the entire depth of the skin. It is helpful to know if you have a history of skin cancers or if anyone in your family has had skin cancer. It is also helpful to know your sun exposure history as well as any history of sun burns or tanning beds. An in person exam is very helpful to fully appreciate all of the details of your lesion. Again a biopsy is the only way to know for sure, and when done by a professional who is an expert in skin treatments, cancers that are identified early are easily treatable, even melanoma if caught early! Thank you for your question and photograph. In my opinion, any mole that is concerning should always be evaluated by a dermatologist where the skin can be evaluated in person utilizing a dermatoscope. If there are any concerning features, then a biopsy should be performed. I highly recommend you consult with a board certified dermatologist to have your mole evaluated. Take care and good luck.
