Answer: Botox for TMJ Thank you for your question! The amount of Botox required to achieve relief from grinding is dependent on how hypertrophied/strong the masseter muscle feels during the assessment. An average amount for this area could be anywhere from 12-24 units per side. Some patients who have had these injections for years do tell me that they do not grind anymore. I think this could possibly be a learned habit from not being able to use the muscles are strongly as before. Please make sure to consult with a board-certified dermatologist for an in-person assessment.

Answer: Botox for square jaw, TMJ pain, & grinding I have been treating TMJ pain and grinding/clenching for many years now with great success using Botox. I first need to assess the size and strength of the masseter muscle, and ask questions related to migraines, radiating pain, usage of mouthguard etc. I generally prefer to start treatment at around 24 units of Botox per side, and if need be, will increase treatment dosage up to 36 units per side. Every one is unique and requires a careful & thoughtful & educated (see a dermatologist) assessment. I find the Botox lasts anywhere from 2-4 months initially, and does indeed tend to last longer over time, and in some cases I've been able to stop it altogether.
