13 weeks post op belly bulge after tummy tuck and lipo (Photo)

Question

I am 64 13 weeks ago I had tummy tuck and lipo to the sides. Since I have a bulge as in photos which is hard and does not go down. I saw my surgeon a few days ago who has told me that what he did was OK and that the bulge was in my stomach nothing to do with operation. Can this be right. I told him I was not happy as he promised me a flat stomach. I am very fit and do athletics to world standard. What else can I do?

Thank you for your question.After a tummy tuck as you are healing your abdominal muscles get weaker during that time, this can cause some laxity or an appearance of a bulge to the abdomen.  Have you started back with core exercises yet? I would recommend core strengthening exercises to help strengthen your abdominal muscles back up before you get discouraged. Try that for the next 4-6 weeks and if no improvement, then contact your surgeon again. Good luck.

Dear Lyn,    Thanks for your side picture, though front picture would have been helpful. From observing your picture, the bulge of the lower abdomen is obvious. Since your upper abdomen is flat, the lower abdomen bulge is , most likely, due to muscles laxity or , possibly, fibroids (uterus tumors) . That can be easily  ascertained on physical exam , while you lie flat on your back. If at the time of exam your stomach is flat, that rules out fibroids, so, the only solution for your situation is re tightening of stomach muscles. The cause for your condition can be surgical or due to strenuous activity on your part, too early after surgery.     Discuss this matter, again, with your surgeon. If the response that you are gettin is not satisfactory, consult with other experienced board certified plastic surgeons who operate in accredited surgery center for your safety. Most importantly, check the before and after pictures in the photo gallery, to make sure that they are numerous, consistent and attractive with flat stomach, tight and youthful skin, nice belly button and low scar.                   Best of luck,                                               Dr Widder

If the swelling or bulge is hard, make sure you don't have a significant seroma. This is the most common cause of swelling after a tummy tuck.
A seroma can with time (3 months) get scar tissue around it-  making it hard. This can be called a chronic seroma. I would be concerned you have this.
An ultrasound can be diagnostic. Treatment will probably require surgery for removal. If there is fluid inside it, your doctor can try aspiration first.

Not everyone treated has a flat stomach afterwards. This is related to many factors including curvature of the spine,age, abdominal contents, etc..
