Hello, I had lip fillers done last year 2017 October. I had no problems - apart, each few month it gets swollen. Now, 12 months passed from when I had it done and tonight it got swollen quite a lot, and the filler inside gets hard now it is getting slowly back to normal. I don’t have allergies, no allergies to food and never had swollen lip before the fillers. Could you please advise me? Thank you
Answer
Hi there! Thank you for your query. Usually any swelling caused by Juvederm filler injections would go down after 7-10 days. I would suggest you book a review with your injector and discuss your symptoms with them. Hope this helps! Dr Rupert

Hi, I'm sorry you're experiencing this. The best way to answer this is with an in-person evaluation. I suggest speaking with your injector. If necessary, the filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Hope this helps.

Swelling typically resolves 2 weeks after injections. If you're unhappy with your final results, you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

The swelling dynamics you are describing suggest possible delayed allergic reaction due to filler if there are no other areas with swelling. It is also noted that intermittent high load of sodium and water may exaggerate the volume of the injected area. This appears to be much more noticeable in the over-injected lips. The volume can be reduced with controlled hyaluronidase injection to dissolve part of the filler. There is also a possibility that the intermittent reaction may need to be addressed with steroids. Only a direct examination by your injector will establish the proper intervention. Good luck!

I want to answer your question directly. It is not normal to have swelling that’s new twelve months after a treatment. I have heard of this happening with the newer Vycross products Vollure and Volbella. There are interventions you may want to consider but for that I would recc going to someone who is a physician and can assess the issue medically. Best of luck Sagar Patel MD
