I advise my patients they may suntan with SPF 30 or better after 3 weeks and none have developed an infection. Always a good idea to check with your surgeon's protocol.Dr. Ted Eisenberg, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and Author
In most cases I would expect you to be well enough healed at 4 weeks that sunscreen should pose no risk and is beneficial in reducing redness from sun exposure. If any doubt please check with your surgeon.
Hi and thanks for your question and congratulations on your recent procedure. I typically have my patients using a special scar cream that also has an SPF in it about 3-4 weeks post op. As long as your incisions are healing without any issues, it should be safe to use an SPF. Please make sure to follow up with your surgeon regarding any questions, being that all surgeon have different preferences.Hope this helps.
Silicon-based scar creams are the most recommended topical cream to use at this point in time, assuming you are healing without complications. Sunscreens are good to use after the wounds have closed and there is little risk of developing an infection. Consult with your surgeon regarding this as each surgeon has his/her own protocols to follow.
Thank you for your question. I generally recommend that my patients begin using silicone-based scar gel with SPF 2-3 weeks after most surgeries assuming the wound are healing well. If the wounds are closed, there is no contra-indication to using sunscreen or topical moisturizers. Topical antibiotics such as bacitracin are not necessary and can cause an allergic response with prolonged use. Good luck!
