Do silicone chin implants have potential to last a lifetime or is it likely it will have to be removed at some point? (Photo)

 Thank you for your pictures. A chin implant is a medical device that does not guarantee for a person's lifetime. . It's always possible that the implant may need to be removed.   In my opinion, you could benefit from a small sliding genioplasty and some liposuction the beneatg the chin. This will give you a nice subtle improvement. A genioplasty uses your own bone which avoids the use of the implanted device that may fail or require removal for other reasons. 

Hello,I have been placing Silastic chin implants for over 20 years. It is very rare to remove the implant for any reason. Occasionally an implant will be undersized or there may be some element of asymmetry that might require replacement. In general we expect these implants to be stable and trouble-free over your entire life.Best of luck.

Chin implants do of the potential to last your lifetime. Unlike breast implants for example, chin implants are solid and will not rupture. Although an infection or a malposition may be reasons for removal, it would be unusual for these events to occur later in life following your procedure.

Thanks for sharing. You appear to be a great candidate for a chin implant. The silicone implants have been used for many years. Silicone is an inert substance and should sit quietly and permanently for life. Reasons to remove would be infection or placement issues which is uncommon.  I have never hear of an implant being worn out or expired or removed for boney erosion. They come in various sizes so it is up to you how subtle you would like your result to be. Discuss with your surgeon. Best of luck as it is a highly satisfying procedure. 

Chin implants are permanent and will never need to be replaced because of structural failure. Some chin implant patient's do under revision due to initial miscalculation of implant style or size or implant placement issues. Many chin implant's will have some degree of partial implant settling into the bone (what is erroneously termed as bone erosion) but this is not a reason for implant revision or removal. There has to be other aesthetic issues with it to have further surgery.

 Placement of a chin implant is usually a one-time procedure, and the implant stays in forever. We have been using Silastic chin implants for 25 years with an excellent success rate. Computer imaging performed in the office setting would  give an idea of what the chin implant can accomplish. Chin implants are manufactured in a variety of sizes and shapes, are placed through a submental approach under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

I personally have had mine in since 1999, so almost 16 years. Guess that is a lifetime to some!!!!!!

I have been performing chin implant surgery for over 25 years.  These implants are permanent and should not have to be replace or removed.  Bone erosion is very rare.  Your chin is weak and I do believe you would benefit from an implant.  The chin implant will project the chin forward to better balance the lower half of your face.  A bit of liposuction under the chin will enhance the look of the implant.

Silicone chin implants are considered permanent. They don't have to be changed as they have the consistency of firm rubber. This is in contradistinction to breast implants which are made with thin silicone shell. filled with salt water or silicone gel and generally fail after, perhaps, 15 years.I have never had to remove an implant for  a so-called "erosion" in 40 years of practice and after a large number of implants inserted.Decades ago I saw a first report of an erosion in the literature but who knows what the product was, and the technique used, etc. Erosion is clinically not considered a significant risk for chin implants.
