There are little to no side effects from PRP hair injections as you are using your own platelets. The injection utilizes small needles so the risk of bruising is minimal. We have patients resume regular activities immediately post treatment.I do not see the added value to ACell and there are no published clinical studies showing that ACell will enhance the PRP hair results. I can't justify the significant added cost.
I don't use Acell, so I can't speak to its effectiveness. PRP is showing more and more promise with new research studies being released showing that it is effective for a variety of hair loss applications, including male-pattern baldness. Due to these studies and my own experience with my patients, I do believe that PRP works for hair loss. It is not a substitute for a hair transplant, but can be a nice bridge to a transplant, a supplement in a post-hair transplant patient, or a non-surgical option for patients who are not interested in a transplant.Side effects include bruising and swelling primarily. Infection is a potential risk, but not something I've seen. Discomfort or a mild headache are also a possibility. All of these side effects are usually very mild. All the best,
My fellow (I am co-director for an AAFPRS affiliated University fellowship program) reviewed the American literature (available on pubmed, and any other literature we could find) on this topic. If only one injection was performed, the results were random. If two injections were performed, about 50% of people (male and female) responded. If three injections were performed about 80% of people responded. Whether or not subsequent injections need be performed to maintain results could not be determined. I suppose that further data will need to be obtained, but that is what is available so far.
PRP or Acell may be offered for genetic androgenic alopecia or male pattern balding. You need to see a doctor to understand if it may be effective in your case.
IN my opinion, most of the side effects of PRP come from the injections and not the PRP. Although I don't use A Cell, I have seen some prolonged tenderness @2 to 5 days. I have also seen localized bruising And muscle cramps. The benefits of PRP outweigh the side effects.Good luck!
So far there are many reports of PRP working to prevent hair loss but to date, no solid scientific studies on this. From what we can tell so far is that at a minimum, it can really help maintain and strengthen the hair you currently have and at best actually promote new hair growth to a degree. The side effects is mostly swelling, some tenderness and possibly bruising for a few days. It really isn't a replacement for hair transplantation or transfer but can act a supplemental treatment to enhance the results or as a temporary measure if you are waiting to have hair transfer in the future.
PRP (Platelet rich plasma) helps 30-40 % of men with androgenetic hair loss. Whether adding ACell to PRP adds further benefit still needs good solid scientific randomized double blind clinical studies to be done. But it is potentially beneficial as well. SIDE EFFECTS INCLUDE:1. tenderness for a few days in scalp2 swelling in scalp and forehead (small proportion of people)3. rare shedding4. a bit of pain when blood is taken from the arm
The Hair Restoration Community has been using PRP as far back as 10 years ago. Only lately has this procedure become more popular and better studied. In one clinical study most patients who had PRP treatment alone reported improvement. In the same study about 50% of the men reported moderate to significant improvement. So there is reason to be optimistic as doctors around the world continue to use and modify treatment parameters for the best results. I have used PRP or PRP plus Acell in many patients during a hair transplant and others, especially those who have a significant amount of hair left with very good results. But it can work better for some than others and there is no way to predict in advance. I have found side effects to be quite minimal except for some scalp tenderness for a day or two.
