Every time I research BBLs I can only find bias or out-of-date articles and studies. I haven't been able to find anything recent (within the past year) about BBLs other than the death toll decreasing dramatically. I know that some surgeons fail to take all the necessary steps to make sure a patient doesn't face any complications. Unfortunately, this issue happens in every country. But why is the Dominican Republic deemed the most dangerous place to receive cosmetic surgery?
Answer: Is it safe to get a BBL in the dominican republic? Hello and thank you for posting your question. I would recommend focusing your research on specific doctors rather then a country. The fact that countries like the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Mexico are international hubs for plastic surgery means that their will always be bad press around them. The truth is, there are good and bad doctors in all counties. And tragedies can happen all over the world…. with all types of surgical procedures, not just plastic surgery. Best advice I can give you is to try to research the surgeons safety record, not just the size and shape of his BBL results. Make sure that the surgeon is Board Certified. Read reviews. Try to speak (not just emails) with the surgeon and or staff members. Try to contact prior patients. Try to get an idea on how available the surgeon is to patients and how responsable he or she is with post op care. In summary, each individual surgeon is responsible for their safety record. Just try researching them instead of their country. Bets of luck on your journey! Dr. Miguel Mota

Answer: Choosing a surgeon Dear Sociable850521, finding the right Dr. is extremely challenging especially with the number of online platforms and resources available. There a lot of great Dr's available. Make sure he/she is a board-certified plastic surgeon. Definitely check to make sure your choice specializes in the procedure you want and spend the time to read through patient testimonials. There is a number of different sites where you can check for reviews (Realself, yelp, google, etc.).You can always pick up the phone and call around also, find an office you feel comfortable with and set up a few consultations. Answer: Safe BBL: SCUBA Technology A safe BBL allows for the transfer of fat by minimizing risk of a potentially detrimental fat emboli. At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Institute, we perform Safe California Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (SCUBA) technology to ensure that our patients achieve their desired results while minimizing risk. The optimal BBL outcomes are achieved with: 1) use of VASER liposuction to harvest the fat, 2) a closed looped system such as Puregraft to process the fat, and 3) strategic micro-packet transplant technique. These three processes have demonstrated over 95% fat graft take. This means that your results will be stable as long as you maintain your weight. As an official VASER trainer, I am routinely referred unhappy BBL patients. One of the most common reasons for disgruntled BBL patients is that patients are not able to accurately communicate their desired buttocks goals to their surgeons. A buttocks assessment tool can be an invaluable tool to communicate to your surgeon the exact buttocks size and shape you are desiring. A Skype or FaceTime consultation with a BBL specialist can help you get an accurate recommendation and pricing. Respectfully, Arian Mowlavi MD, FACS Realself 100 Hall of Fame Inductee

Answer: Information available to the consumer There is little unbiased information available to the consumer when it comes to cosmetic surgical procedures. I recommend patients stay local for surgical procedures for a number of reasons. Delivering consistent high-quality liposuction and fat transfer results is more difficult than most people believe. The changes are permanent and more or less irreversible. In order to minimize the chance of having an undesirable outcome I encourage patient to find the most experienced and talented plastic surgeon in their community. The only way to do this is to have multiple in person consultations. While it’s possible to do this long-distance it is very expensive and time-consuming unless someone can coordinate consultations on a single trip. Patients also don’t appreciate the number of people who have serious issues after surgery including the number of patients who need revisions or the complications actually do happen. Most countries recognize the United States as having the highest medical standards in the world and I recommend patients take advantage of this. The primary and really only reason patients travel to developing countries for cosmetic surgery is as a cost saving measure. One of my professors used to say don’t look for bargains when it comes to cosmetic surgery or parachutes. There’s also the saying that you get what you pay for. The most advanced countries have typically the highest medical standards and this is something to be sought after. Luckily for those who live in the United States and most people have access to exceedingly high quality of care. That said it is still far from a guarantee that someone will be happy with the outcome of a cosmetic surgical procedure. I recommend all patients stay local and have multiple in person consultations at which time plastic surgeons can be individually vetted. Email consultations by sending pictures may seem sufficient and may be convenient but it is insufficient in comparison to a quality in depth in person consultation. In the end it’s a free world and patience are free to choose where they go and who they choose to do these procedures. The world of cosmetic surgery is very much caveat emptor. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
