I have seen two surgeons for ear lob reduction. Both recommend edge excision. One uses removable stitches along the outer edge of the ear. The other uses dissolvable stitches on the front of the lobe itself. Better in front of lobe or edge of the ear? Which will give a better result? Thank you!

Answer: Are dissolvable or non-dissolvable stitches best for earlobe reduction surgery? There is no right answer; beautiful outcomes can be achieved either way. Ultimately, more important than the type of suture utilized will be careful selection of surgeon. Experience and attention to detail will be far more important, when it comes to the final aesthetic outcome achieved. Best wishes.

Answer: Earlobe reduction suture selection Thank you for the question! I use the technique shown in the photos and diagram. The inner layer of sutures are dissolvable. For the outer layer, I prefer a non-dissolvable kind (typically nylon) as these are less likely to leave marks on the skin surface. If a tight closure is achieved internally, and a small gauge suture is used for the surface, the difference is most likely minimal. Best of luck and take care!
