I always recommend avoiding the sun completely for at least 7 days after any laser resurfacing procedure. So stay in doors as often as possible for a full week. After that it is usually safe to starting wearing sunscreen. I recommend Elta MD SPF 40 because it has maximum UVA and UVB protection. Also, wear a hat or scarf when possible. No sunscreen last longer than 2 1/2 hours in direct sunlight so remember to reapply.
Cold temperature, by itself, will not cause any harm to your skin after laser resurfacing. Normally, the skin will be more sensitive for a month or two after laser resurfacing and the most important precaution is to avoid sun exposure. So, no matter the temperature, if there is sun you need to protect your face with hats and sunscreen.
However, you will be more sensitive to the sun, wind and cold than you were before. This is especially true for the first few weeks after the treatment. Just make sure you use a lot of sunblock and moisturizer. If you are in the cold, use a scarf over any exposed areas if possible. You won't damage the new skin by being outside, but you may get red.
It is advisable to keep your face covered by a scarf and be sure to wear sunblock or a hat to reduce the contact of sunlight with your skin during the healing process. The cold air alone is unlikely to cause damage however it may cause redness if you are exposed to sunlight. I would suggest to minimize the length of exposure to cold and sunlight however possible. Your skin is very sensitive following a laser resurfacing and must be treated as such. Thank you for your question.
