Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Realself100 Surgeon
The iPledge program does not allow us to give you more than a 30 day supply of Accutane at a time. We have no control over this.If you are a female of child-bearing potential, you will have to get a blood pregnancy test the same day as you see your physician. Not even the President of the United States can override that rule! It's there for your protection.
The most Accutane you can get at any one time is a maximum of up to a 30-day supply. You will need to see your physician each month to get a new prescription. You can only get Accutane monthly because your prescribing physician must enter your information into the IPLEDGE system monthly. If you are a female, you must have a pregnancy test monthly that is negative and be entered into the IPLEDGE system before receiving a prescription and then you have 7 days from the negative pregnancy test to pick up the prescription. If you are a male, you must still be entered into the IPLEDGE system and your prescription must be picked up within 30 days. Most prescribing physicians of Accutane also require monthly lab work. Also this information was on the consent form on line 8 of the Patient Information/Informed Consent (for all Patients) for males and females that all Accutane patients sign. Monthly office visits enable the physician to review your labs, check your progress, to check for any signs of side effects, and to write a new prescription.

What you describe is normal. You should discuss your concerns with your doctor. Flares are normal in the beginning. Depending on your weight, acne, and tolerance, you will most likely need a higher dose eventually.
Not every patient has excessive dryness with Accutane. It does not mean that you won't continue to become more dry. If you are still having acne break outs (which you can have the entire course of the treatment) then discuss this and your concerns with the prescribing physician....
