Will Accutane help redness, flushing & mild swelling? (Photos)

Question

Hi there! I’ve had subtype 1 rosacea primarily with constant erythema to one cheek more than the others and constant flushing. My dermatologist recommended accutane. Will this help my redness, flushing and mild swelling (to my one cheek/ that flushes)? Thanks so much!!

Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers.

I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. For rosacea, I like a combination approach, using lasers (ProYellow, Pulsed Dye/Vbeam, Excel V, BBL, Pico), peels and botox to the cheeks. This makes dramatic changes in color and symptoms. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Two topical vasoconstrictors, Mirvaso and Rhofade, are FDA approved for reducing facial redness and flushing. I would discuss using these, rather than a very potent systemic agent that can be associated with significant side effects, such as oral isotretinoin. Make sure that you consult with a board certified dermatologist and do your due diligence on Accutane before agreeing to proceed. Best of luck.

Likely not. For this stage of rosacea the best treatments are sun protection, brimodinine, oxymetazoline and laser treatments. Best of luck

Yes - Accutane should help with your Rosacea and it can potentially improve the KP. It's hard to evaluate the facial swelling you are mentioning here so an in-person assessment is recommended.
