After 14 months of hair transplant, should I stop the Minoxidil or not?

hello, it's been 14 months that i had my hair transplant. 6500 grafts. My question is should i stop using the minoxidil or continue. I'm using it once a night. And i scare to stop. should i continue less often or stop completely.

You need to ask your doctor.  Some doctors advocate using minoxidil after surgery.  Some doctors do not.  There is no absolute rule.

It will be advantageous for you to continue with the medication in order to maintain your existing hair. There have been numerous reports of hair loss resuming when patients stop using minoxidil.

We advise our patients to use Minoxidil  even 14 months after the hair transplant as Male Pattern Baldness is a progressive condition. So, in order to delay the further hair loss, you should continue. However, if you are of a higher grade of baldness, there are no more hair to be lost and you have got only transplanted hair on your scalp, then you can even stop Minoxidil as the transplanted hair will not fall after stopping medicine..

Very impressive that your doctor managed to give you 6500 grafts. Having committed to a hair transplant, I would suggest you keep on the minoxidil to try and hold on to any miniaturising hairs within and around the transplant zone.

In theory this does not have an effect on the new transplanted hairs just on the hairs you had before the transplant.  So really, it affects the final overall look but not the actual transplant

Minoxidil helps with maintaining your own native hair and slow down future hair loss.  You may not get muCh growth using minoxidil, but once you stop you may experience a lot of shedding.  At our clinic, if a patient is young specially,  since hair loss is progressive we suggest to do hair transplant to regain hair in the thinning areas and in addition use a medical regiment such as minoxidil to slow down future hair loss of the native hair.

The only problem with stopping minoxidil is from the dependencies on the hairs that have been benefited. I tell my surgical patients on minoxidil to continue using it up until the night before the hair transplant and then restart it 2 weeks after the procedure. The blood vessel impact from minoxidil on the scalp will not impact a hair transplant. I’ve had plenty of transplant patients that use minoxidil prior to surgery and have never seen any kind of issues related to using the medication.If you stop minoxidil at the time of the transplant and decide to never restart it, the withdrawal effects of the drug I have discussed here before will become the risk. It won’t effect the transplanted hairs, but you will lose any benefits you had from the medication.This question for you at 14 months becomes a personal choice. Minoxidil only works on new hair grown from the minoxidil, not the hair transplanted hair. Only about 50% of people who use minoxidil get a good result from it. If your hair transplant is good enough and you are confident that the transplants alone supply you the amount of hair you want, then you can stop it. It is your call.
