Should I undergo a septoplasty if I want to learn martial arts for self-defense?

In general, it is best to postpone elective
septoplasty to the time when one is not involved with contact sports if
possible, but if strong desire to do so then at least 3 months abstinence from
such activities and possible use of nose guards during the activity for a year
are recommended. This risk should obviously be measured against the improved airflow advantage that a functional nasal surgery can provide for the athlete. 

Hello, thanks for sharing your question and photos. Since it takes up to a year to heal fully from Septoplasty, it's best to wait to undergo surgery. If you do proceed with the surgery, remember to schedule 3 months off from sports and other strenuous activities following surgery. Depending on the contact level required in your martial arts course, you may need more or less time off. Your best option is to discuss septoplasty in person with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon.

A septoplasty is performed in the back of the nose only to improve airflow dynamics,  and does not change the shape of it.  A well performed septoplasty will leave enough structural,t so there should not be any issues with contact sports. A cosmetic rhinoplasty procedure involves re-shaping the external appearance of the nose and making it smaller with osteotomies placed in the nasal bones, dorsal  hump removal, and  tip cartilage  work.  If you are planning on getting hit in the nose multiple times, its best it perform the rhinoplasty procedure after  you are finished with contact sports 

The reality is that septoplasty and rhinoplasty make the nose weaker.  BUT, the amount of breathing relief may be well worth the weaker nose.  I would hold off on contact for 3 months after septorhinoplasty.

Dear Lazyusername, I am unsure of what contact will be involved with your martial arts classes and how long you will be considering taking them. Many of my patients take martial arts classes and have continued to take them after surgery with no concerns. I would find out the extent of the program and what possible contact will be made.
