Itching around stem of implant (20 years post) - could this signal a leak? (Photo)

Question

I am almost 20 years post procedure and have had previous rhabdomyolysis which dropped my implants from under the muscle. Recently I've developed severe itching from what feels like the stem of the implant. I have no sores on my skin in the area, but there are times the area feels hot, and the area itches fiercely! Does this mean I may have developed a leak?

I understand your concern. However, without a proper assessment, it would be difficult to determine what is wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment or ask for a second opinion. Only after a thorough examination, you can get proper recommendations and advice.

The vast majority of silicone ruptures are "silent" or asymptomatic. Patients are blissfully unaware of any change. It is for this reason that manufacturers recommend regular surveillance imaging (5 years post op and every 2-3 years after) to ensure device integrity.

At 20 years post placement, there may a device failure but that doesn't necessarily account for your symptoms.

The best recommendation is to seek out an in-person evaluation and potentially imaging.

As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

Please see your surgeon for an inperson assessment. This is unusual and although it may not be related to your implants, it should be checked out just in case.

Thanks for your question. Silicone implants, even those placed 20 years ago, can rupture, and these ruptures are typically “silent.” By that, I mean there are no obvious signs on the skin or breast. As such, I recommend to my patients (in line with FDA recommendations) that all silicone breast implants be evaluated with an ultrasound or MRI 5–6 years after placement, and then every 2–3 years thereafter on an ongoing basis. If you have concerns, get this imaging to provide more information and, hopefully, peace of mind. Hope that helps.
