When can my jp drain be removed after fluid has stopped for more then 24 hours?

I encourage you to contact your surgeon about your drain. She/He may request that you come in earlier if your drain has not collected any fluid for 48 hours. Until it is removed continue to care for it as instructed by your surgeon.

It's actually not bad to leave it in a few extra days, assuming you are otherwise okay (ie that fluid is not reaccummulating).  Leaving a drain in a little longer actually gives the skin and subcutaneous tissue an opportunity to scar down and gives the healing a head start.You should of course contact your own PS concerning this and other aspects of your post-operative care, particularly since you developed a seroma and it was addressed expeditiously.I hope that this helps and good luck,Dr. Alan EnglerMember of RealSelf100

That should not be a problem. Keep an eye on the area around where the drainage tube exits. Make sure there is no redness that occurs or start experiencing extreme discomfort of the area. If you haven't already make sure you frequently strip/milk the drain to make sure there is nothing blocking the drainage tube. Drains fluctuate output and increase according to activity so it is wise to not rush the removal of it.
