what happens if you use vitamin c the night before prp microneedling on face? what happens if you use benzoyl peroxide + clindamycin topical gel on your forehead prior to prp microneedling on face? i've heard you're not supposed to but why are we not supposed to?

Hi @Adventurous947925! I do not recommend using vitamin C serum  24-48 hours after your treatment since you are at risk of granuloma formation. I also do not recommend Benzoyl Peroxide the night prior to  your microneedling treatment because it can make the skin dry and more sensitive. I hope this was helpful!

There is no downside to using Vitamin C serum the day before your microneedling appointment. Traditionally, vitamin C is used in the morning to work in tandem with your SPF to reduce free radical damage; however, there are some vitamin C serums that recommend both morning and night use. It is important not to use vitamin C for 1 week post-needling treatment; it has been observed in some cases to create granulomas when used on freshly needled skin. This is because vitamin C is designed to stay on the skin's surface and not penetrate past the epidermis. I would not recommend the use of benzoyl peroxide prior to this, due to the drying effects of this product on the skin. Clindamycin is an antibiotic used to treat active acne in topical form. It is not recommended to receive any sort of microneedling treatment with multiple active acne lesions present on the skin in the treatment area. This transfers acne-causing bacteria across the face, thus resulting in the formation of new breakouts.

Hello! Thank you for your question about topical vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide, and clindamycin before microneedling. First, vitamin C serum is best used in the mornings. You can use that the morning of the day before your microneedling treatment. However, do not use vitamin C serum for 24-48 hours AFTER your treatment, as it has been shown to form granulomas in some patients. I would advise against the use of benzoyl peroxide the night before your microneedling treatment because it can make the skin dry and more sensitive, thus making your skin more dry and flaky after microneedling. Clindamycin alone should be ok the night before microneedling, as it is a topical antibiotic. Please avoid the use of any of these topicals for 24 hours after your treatment, as the microchannels remain open.

No, that increases the risk of allergic reactions and granuloma formation. Most of the reported side effects from microneedling are attributed to the application of topicals before or right after. Best, Dr. K
