How quickly can you begin exercise after balloon insertion?

The Gastric Balloon is placed as an outpatient endoscopy procedure. You will most likely have nausea the first week. The limiting factor on exercise will be the control of this symptom. If you feel OK, then I let my patients exercise right away. Some MDs may prescribe anti-nausea medication that will make you feel sleeps, this could affect your ability to exercise. Be aware that your fluid intake will be a little slower, so avoid dehydration.

You can begin exercising as soon as you like. In reality, you will be adjusting to the balloon for the first few days, and most people feel nauseous during this time. I recommend taking it easy the first few days (and up to the first week), focusing on staying hydrated. Once you start advancing your diet and increasing your calories, you should be ready to exercise. Your body will tell you. There are no limitations in terms of types of exercise you can do. Many people ask us if it is "safe" to do certain movements, like sit-ups, or running. Yes! You cannot damage the balloon with any type of exercise. And while you may initial "feel" the balloon moving around, you will eventually get used to this and it will not be noticeable.

During the first week after placement, the patient is on a clear liquid diet. I usually allow patients to exercise when I know they can keep hydrated and take in proper nutrion. I hope this helps.
