Do I have to get my Dermal surface piercings removed before a BBL?

Hello, This is something you would need to discuss with your provider. Patients are typically asked to remove all metal before surgery to prevent issues when electrocautery is being used. I personally don't use electrocautery when performing BBL's but every surgeon has their own unique techniques. Ask your surgeon ahead of time. Do not wait until the day of surgery. If your surgeon does allow you to keep them in, I recommend placing paper tape or a bandage over the piercings to prevent them from accidentally getting snagged during surgery, transfer, dressing, etc. Hope this helps. Best Wishes, Dr. Lane Smith Las Vegas, NV

most plastic surgeons recommend their patient to remove all jewelry and piercings prior to surgery. But every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

If the dermal surface piercings are in an area that will be liposuctioned for the BBL, the piercings should be removed to lessen the probability of infection.  Your PS should be able to remove them.Kenneth Hughes, MD, ABPS Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

 If you not having any other surgery besides liposuction and bbl there is no need to remove these piercings. This is because no electrocautery will be used. In my practice I just leave these in. Best of luck 

Piercings do not have to be removed with a BBL as long as the surgeon does not use the cautery machine. Please contact a BBL specialist to help you optimize your results following a BBL. There are definite preparatory procedures that you can take to help you optimize your results.

most piercings and jewelry is asked to be removed in formal operating rooms. If they are permanently placed it will be to the surgeons discretion  Personally I would leave them but others may vary in their response.  In the end what matters is what your provider feels is most appropriate.  Mats Hagstrom MD
