I want lipo for abdomen. have a small umbilical hernia. Surgeon stated hernia is small may loose my belly button.

44 year old, active, good health, no meds. Surgeon stated I could have lipo without repairing hernia since it is so small. Any suggestions?

Only then can the specialist/surgeon recommend when you are cleared for liposuction.When choosing your surgeon for liposuction make sure they are board certified in a surgical specialty.Best of luck with your procedure!

Thank you for your excellent question.  I would strongly recommend you first have the hernia investigate to confirm that one is present as liposuction should not be performed in that case in order to minimize the risk of possible injury.  Depending on it's size and your desired results it may be best to have it repaired as part of a tummy tuck for the best results.  See a board certified plastic surgeon in consultation, they can give you the best treatment recommendation.

My advice is that you first have the hernia investigated thoroughly, liposuction is beneficial for someone who is in good health and has worked hard to get in shape. I agree that the result of disturbing a hernia with a liposuction tube can be identical to a stab wound, and can result in loss of blood, infection or a complication. If the hernia is really small it would be possible to have liposuction without repair but to be sure I would recommend you see a hernia specialist to make sure there is no intestinal herniation.

A hernia is an out pooching of contents into a place they don't normally belong. In the case of tummy hernias contents of the tummy including fat or actual gut are pushed out to under the skin.in Liposuction steel tubes hooked to high suction are repeatedly thrust through fat sucking it. But such steel tubes have no intelligence and will perforate whatever they are being pushed through   The result of stabbing a hernia with a liposuction tube can be identical to a stab wound or s gunshot to the belly: perforated intestine, blood loss, serious infection and potentially death. Commin sense and most Olastic surgeons would have you fix your hernia before performing liposuction. Good Luckpeyer Aldea MD

One must be very careful with liposuction if there is an abdominal hernia of any sort.   If bowel is in the hernia a puncture could occur.   Best get the hernia repaired first.
