Is an abnormal body structure like scoliosis causing pain enough for insurance covered abdominoplasty?

I highly doubt that your insurance company will cover this procedure despite their language you mentioned. Even if somehow it was initially approved, that doesn't guarantee payment. I have been involved in cases where the insurance companies said "yes" in the predetermination phase, then denied the procedure postoperatively, leaving the patient with a large unexpected bill from the hospital.

Tummy tuck is not an operation which is covered by insurance.  Neither the curvature of your spine nor the pain will not be addressed by tummy tuck.

Many patients who undergo abdominoplasty report that back pain has improved in the wake of the operation. Nevertheless, this is not considered a standard treatment for back pain per se. I doubt insurance will cover it.

The insurance company will not cover a tummy tuck. They write all kinds of garbage on their sites making it sound like they are really out there to provide care for the patients. Their only interest is to make money and they make this by refusing care. Even if they authorize the procedure they will deny the payment after it is performed

Unfortunately, most American do not understand how Medical insurance works. It's understandable because the process is made difficult on purpose.Simply put, when you (your employer) purchases insurance you are essentially hiring a caterer for a party. You decide beforehand on the menu (portion sizes, tea sandwiches VS. shrimp, crab or more expensive items), open bar or not and a budget is set. Your coverage is essentially defined as to what will be PARTIALLY paid for and what is not. Then, to prevent losses the insurer wants YOU to carry part of the cost. So even though you are "covered" you still are on the hook for co-payments for each visit and for ever increasing "deductibles" which must be paid by your first before the doctor/hospital are paid. To further compound matters, MOST insurers must be asked (precertify) if to bother performing the operation, BUT even if they approve if can still renege and deny payment which means YOU are now liable for a much greater amount than you thought possible.I have never seen "structural" spine pain (ie scoliosis, disk, nerve root) improve with a Tummy Tuck. Such conditions require operations on the spine itself.  Furthermore, I have never seen an insurance company approve a cosmetic surgery. Such insurers often view EVERYTHING Plastic Surgeons do as Cosmetic even when we do Reconstructive procedures.  Personally, I would consult with a good Spine surgeon to see what he/she recommends to relieve your pain and once this situation is resolved then pick a good Plastic surgeon to help you with your figure.Good Luck,Peter Aldea, MDMemphis, TN

For a definitive answer, best to check with your insurance company but ( sorry to say)  I would predict that insurance companies will not cover tummy tuck surgery, even if it were done in an effort to relieve back pain. Best wishes.
