How long after upper blepharoplasty for gym and full eye makeup?

I usually recommend avoiding makeup on the incision and vigorous excercise until about 3 weeks. This usually allows the incision to close over so makeup doesn’t interfere and for sufficient strength of the incision. Lighter exercise and makeup around the incision can be performed earlier with care after about the second week. Healing times can vary so it’s always best to check with  your surgeon during your post op visits.

If all is healing normally, I let my patients go back to full exercise by 3 weeks and make-up from 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. Just be gentle removing the make-up as not to disturb the healing process.

In my practice, I generally allow my upper blepharoplasty patients to resume eye makeup at about 4 weeks post-operatively, though if there is a special function they must attend then I may allow earlier application of makeup. I allow light gym activity after 2 weeks and full activity at 4 weeks. Both of these protocols are in place to allow adequate time for the incision to heal and for the most severe swelling to go down. Note there may be some lingering swelling that could appear once activity levels start to go up. Rohit Jaiswal, MD 

Hi Joanne2015,Thank you for sharing your question,We normally advise, light to moderate exercise may be resumed at 2-3 weeks but it may take at least 3-4 weeks before you can get back to higher impact activities, such as aerobics, Swimming / diving should be avoided during the first 3-6 weeks after surgery.Expect to be bruised and swollen after surgery. Different people heal at different rates, butabout 70% of the swelling and bruising is gone after one week. About 90% of the swellingand bruising is gone after two weeks. After two weeks, it is often difficult to tell that if thepatient has had eyelid surgery.We recommend waiting at least 10 days before applying any type of eye make-up including eyeshadow, fake lashes, mascara and eyeliner.

Each surgeon has their own preference for the timing of exercise and wearing eye make up after upper blepharoplasty.  My preference is to wait a week for both exercise and wearing make up.   

The best resource for information would be your board certified plastic surgeon as he/she knows your condition best. each surgeon has his/her own post-op protocols. Generally, makeup is not advised until around a month or so to prevent irritation and delayed healing. Remember that makeup is a foreign material you are still swollen. This means that you can easily be irritated with small foreign particles.

Hey joann2015.  Good morning.  Hope you are doing well.  I tell my patients that as soon as they feel up to it, they can go to the gym.  This will not change the results. You may experience and increase in swelling.  However, with sweating, etc.  just keep the area clean.  As far as makeup, I would make sure that all incisions are completely closed and healed. This should be about one week.
