Male - mid-forties, with olive skin (type IV). Black beard (with white hair in some places) I am considering IPL treatment for sun spots on my face. I'd like to ensure my beard is not "weakened" and (if it needs to be shaved off before each treatment) that it grows back as full/thick as it is now. I hear black hair absorbs the light more than blond/white hair does. How close to the beard line can the device be placed, and on the forehead, how close to the hairline without damaging the hair?

You need to gradually increase settings .Another option would be laser for both brown and red color. The q switched yag in the 1064 wavelength targets the brown color and the 532 targets the red coor.
I am aware that patients on Lyrica have had Rosacea treatments with lasers without deleterious effects. As such, it should be safe. Check with the treating physician.dr Karamanoukian#RealSelf100 Member
Ha shoots has no correlation with the effect of Ipl. To treat swelling use Bromelain orally two three times a day. This is pineapple enzyme and is very effective in taking away swelling.
