I have a thin face, if I tighten my jawline with a lower lift will this make my face even thinner?

Thank for the question. I understand your concern, however, it's usually not an issue if facelift done properly. To have an
effective and long-lasting lift, most surgeons believe in tightening the
underlying muscle layer, which is known as SMAS. In addition to pulling the skin
and tightening the muscle layer, we also use your own fat to
fill the specific fat compartments of your face, in what is becoming
popularized as "lift and fill" facelift by many authors. Fat grafting to cheeks restores the facial volume, which has been lost with aging. Combining
the two is a very powerful tool in facial rejuvenation. I would
consult with a plastic surgeon and discuss your specific goals. Please ask your surgeon to show your before and after pictures of
his/her patients to get a clear understanding of what is involved in the
procedure.

Thank you for your question.  People are often concerned that a facelift would excessively change their looks and in some way would even make their face less attractive.  This concern was certainly justified with some older facelift techniques that relied primarily on tightening of the skin.  However, modern day facelifts are performed in a way that preserve the natural facial appearance.   Instead of  "tightening" the jawline (this could certainly make the face look thinner), modern facelift would restore your natural jawline contour.  Find a plastic surgeon in your area that specializes in facelifts.  The doctor should be able to offer you rejuvenation procedure that would make you look your best.Best wishes!Dr. Konstantin

Thank you for posting your interesting question. A properly performed  facelift is designed to tighten the jawline and get rid of jowling. In fact, a lower facelift is a very effective solution. Only, the excess skin should be removed not additional volume. Most of the aging of the face is due to bone loss and most facelifts today have added volume with fat grafting and Sculptra aesthetics's to restore the lost volume, not make the face look puffy. I recommend that you have a consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who is experienced with Face and Neck lifts. At the time your consultation, you will be examined, discuss your optimal surgical option and see dozens of the plastic surgeon's before and after facelift results. The goal of a facelift is not to make the face  thinner, simply tighten loose facial and neck skin, tighten loose facial and neck muscles, and removed fatty deposits in the neck.  For many examples of facelifts from our practice, please see the link and the video below

Hi NY76,The true answer is it depends. The best way to address your concerns is to see a surgeon for a formal consultation. It is possible to simulate the anticipated changes during your visit. If you have a degree of loss of volume (which most people do), there are options for the addition of either fillers or fat or both, depending on the area. Facial implants are also a possibility but they are best for particular situations. Again, meeting with a few different surgeons to get their opinion will be most helpful.Hope this helps!dr. silver

 Hi, I have performed many SMAS facelifts for over 30 years and have performed many minimally, invasive SMAS facelifts.  Non smiling photos of your face from the front and side would help in the evaluation.  If your face appears elongated, thin or rectangular this typically is a result of cheeks that are flat or concave in the front.  This is independent of lower face sagging tissue called "jowls".  
 Following my beauty principles, women look the most feminine, youthful and attractive with heart shaped faces.  Heart shaped faces have cheeks that are full and round in the front.  Cheek augmentation with a dermal filler or using cheek implants for a permanent enhancement will create full, round cheeks that will feminize the entire face.  Conversely, men appear chiseled and handsome with angularity in the cheeks, chin  and mandibular angles. 
 If the chin is weak, this creates an imbalance making the nose appear larger, the mid face top heavy and the lower face look short that de-emphasizes the lips and allows early formation of a double chin.  Chin augmentation using a chin implant will add projection to the chin creating harmony and balance to the lower face.   I have found that placement of a silastic chin implant, through a small curved incision under the chin (also allows excess skin removal) to be very safe, quick and highly effective.
 If you have "jowls” these are sagging facial tissues which remain the primary indication for some form of a SMAS facelift.  The underlying SMAS layer, of the face, must be dissected, lifted, trimmed and re-sutured (not merely folded or suspended with threads or sutures that will not last).  The excess skin is then removed and the facelift incisions closed.
 My most popular SMAS facelift is the minimally invasive, short incision SMAS facelift that has all the benefits of more invasive facelifts (traditional, mid-face, deep plane, cheek lift and subperiosteal facelifts) but with these added benefits:
very small incisions and no incisions extend or are placed within the hair.
minimal tissue dissection = less bruising and swelling = rapid recovery ( several days instead of weeks or months with the more invasive type facelifts mentioned)
can be performed in 90 minutes or less, with or without general anesthesia
no incisions within the hair = no hair loss
excess fat can be removed from the face and neck
excess skin removed from the face and neck
cheeks, chin and jaw line can be augmented with dermal fillers (I prefer Restylane Lyft) or facial implants
most patients fly back home to parts all over the world in as little as 3 days post-op
 I combine facial shaping with every facelift procedure.  When jowls are present, these should be done in concert and not alone or separately in order to create a naturally, more attractive face.  However, you could always begin by shaping your cheeks with a dermal filler or silastic cheek implants.
