Cost for explant (no lift) in NJ?

Question

I had anatomical ultra cohesive gel partial unders implanted in 2011. I will never be as thin as I was then and my breasts are just far too large and causing issues. I also recently had a seroma issue, which my surgeon told me will likely keep happening. I went today for a consultation for explant (no lift, although I do need one, I am planning one more pregnancy so I think I should wait) and the cost is $6900! Is this the going rate for explant in NJ? My implants weren't much more than that!

The cost for implant removal will vary based on surgeon, procedure, and region.  For example a simple implant removal would be different from needing both the implants and capsules removed. Having had a breast augmentation about 5 years ago, and now have a seroma, then you need a thorough work up to see why you have a seroma and do proper investigation.Late seroma formation need the fluid of the seroma to be collected and sent for pathology for specific tests.Then, after the pathology results and making sure no problems with the seroma, an explant can be done. The fluid collected at that time also needs to be collected and sent for specific tests. The capsule also needs to be removed and sent for specific tests.Even if there is no pathology causing the seroma, if you want an explant then a total capsulectomy is needed to assure the seroma does not come back. If the implants are under the muscle then the muscle needs to be freed and reattached to the chest wall.

The cost for removing implants is variable regionally.  If you need to have the implants removed, capsules removed, or other issues addressed then this cost sounds reasonable.  A second opinion is always helpful.  IF you do not have confounding issues with your implants, some surgeons are very comfortable with removing them under local anesthesia as an office procedure and this will certainly save you costs on anesthesia and facility.  I recommend that you also discuss with your surgeon whether or not a drain will need to be placed at the time of surgery to prevent a seroma in the pocket where the implant used to be.Good luck.

Explant cost vary from region to region, type of implants, and if the capsule is going to be removed.  You have a surgeon's fee, anesthesia and facility fee.  A good place to start is with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) for a listing of board certified plastic surgeons in your area.
