Can 2% ketoconazole shampoo damage the hair in long term use?

I read Nizoral with ketoconazole 2% is an anti-dandruff shampoo which could contribute to slow down hair loss. But is it really safe for my hair in the long run if I use it as an hair loss treatment (1-2 times a week)? Thank you

Ketoconazole is an anti fungal medication.  There is a "theoretical" anti-androgen property so many people use it for hair loss.  But clinically I have not ever seen it work.  In fact, it may irritate the skin.

Nizoral shampoo (Ketaconazole) can  partially block DHT receptors. To be effective, it needs to be utilized every day. Unfortunately,  it can be irritating to the scalp. Therefore, I agree with dr. Rassman, one to two times a week is probably not very useful.Jeff Rapaport MD FAADRealself All-star

Nizoral is safe to use and is commonly recommended for dandruff. There are some mild benefitsto its use for combating hair loss particularly in combination with a regimen including minoxidiland other topical ingredients. It can be safely used for long term use.
