28F: I was on medication that made me gain about 30 lbs. I'd like to get back to my goal weight of 135 lbs. I'd like the lipo done as soon as possible. I'd like to remove fat not just from underneath my chin but also on the sides so as to contour my jawline some. If I get lipo done and then continue to lose weight, will this will result in skin laxity or irregularities? Should I truly wait until I've reached close to my goal weight to have the procedure done, or will it not be an issue?
Answer: Weight Loss after Chin Liposuction I appreciate your concern. Weight loss can lead to skin laxity in some patients, particularly if the loss is relatively quick - such as after bariatric surgery. In your case, I do not think that would be a significant concern. You will be losing the weight gradually and at your age, your skin should conform over the new contour just fine. I would advise you to schedule an appointment with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can assess you in person and determine whether now is the right time for your chin lipo. I would guess that there would be no problem undergoing the procedure before you lose more weight.

Answer: Chin Liposuction and Weight Loss Chin Liposuction may be done before the weight loss however it is generally best to wait until your weight is stable after any loss before proceeding with the operation. Under those circumstances less fat may need to be removed and that will give an overall more predictable final positive result. In the event that the weight loss is less than desired or if there are other reasons to proceed before the weight loss it is important that the quality of the neck skin be accurately assessed to determine if it is reasonable to proceed before weight loss. If the skin elasticity is normal and good the procedure may be performed before or after the weight loss. If there is poor skintone of the neck then it would be absolutely best to wait until the final weight loss and stable weight has occurred. Performing liposuction on a neck with loose skin or poor skin quality will usually exaggerate this laxity after the final healing has occurred. If a person has moderate laxity of the neck skin then it can often be satisfactorily tightened with a noninvasive procedure, Ultherapy which in some circumstances would be best performed immediately prior to the liposculpture procedure and again afterwards.

Answer: Losing weight after Liposuction liposuction will permanently change someone’s fat distribution. If that person then gains or loses weight after the procedure they will lose or gain weight based on their new fat distribution. Areas that have less fat like someone’s forearms generally don’t change very much with weight change. That’s how areas that have been treated with liposuction it typically behave. There’s less fat cells present so there’s less change with fluctuations in weight.Best,Mats Hagstrom MD
