Hello, I am a tanned skin African American who is looking to complete the second course of Accutane for back and face acne. I would like to do the CO2 laser as soon as possible for the indentations on my face left from cystic acne. How soon after accutane is it generally safe to get C02 laser and how long will the hyper pigmentation last after C02 laser? Is it typically temporary or possibly permanent if hyperpigmentation occurs? Thank you so much for your answers!

The answer depends upon which CO2 laser is utilized.  Full ablative requires 6 months while Fractional ablative requires zero to 6 weeks depending upon the dose of Accutane and the patient response. Based upon your photo, pre and post treatment with bleaching creams will be needed. Find a scar expert.

It's generally recommended to wait at least six months after completing a course of Accutane before undergoing any type of laser treatment, including CO2 laser. This is because Accutane can affect the healing process and increase the risk of scarring and other complications.

Hyperpigmentation is a possible side effect of CO2 laser treatment, especially for individuals with darker skin tones. It's important to choose a qualified and experienced laser specialist who can tailor the treatment to your specific skin type and concerns to minimize the risk of hyperpigmentation. If hyperpigmentation does occur, it's usually temporary and can be treated with topical skincare products or other treatments recommended by your specialist.
