What is the typical healing process for shave biopsy? Will I have a permanent scar? (Photo)

I had a shave biopsy 4 weeks ago that came back negative, I did not know this could cause a scar. After 4 weeks I still have a red mark that looks like it will scar that I am concerned about.

There can be some scarring with a shave biopsy. It can be improved with silicone gel with growth factors, and a combination of excel V or Pro Yellow lasers to improve color with subcision for blending. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Our treatments use combination therapy to improve the epidermis and dermis for most deep scars. The options available for acne scars depend on the character of your scars, in terms of topography and contour. We see atrophic and hypertrophic acne scars, as well as scars that have hypo and hyperpigmentation. We begin each scar evaluation with an assessment of scar quality and subtype. Our main concern is rebuilding collagen and that is why we use a HIDEF protocol that includes combination therapy. Morpheus 8, scar subcision, fibrous release, fractional laser, CO2 laser, Thulium laser, PDL Vbeam laser, and fractional resurfacing can be used in addition to TCA Cross and chemical peels to further improve skin. Patients should start Melarase AM and Melarase PM for active hyperpigmentation. Always begin with a consultation to decide whether early subcision should be started.

While thin, superficial shave biopsies often can heal with little if any scarring, deeper shaves can produce scars, though it is too early really to know how your biopsy site will mature.  For now consider topical scar creams or tapes with silicone, sun protection, and massage.  Over time, it is likely to improve and the color should lighten.  If you do not see progress, consider consulting with your dermatologist or with a plastic surgeon.  At that time, based on the appearance, recommendations can be made regarding revision, light or laser therapy, needling...  It really depends on how the site matures.  Best of luck!
