What are your thoughts on Sculptra induction through microneedling, under the eye?

I know that Sculptra is not recommended for under the eye but my friend's term wants to micro needle & induct the filler topically. I have had it injected and love it (in my temple). However, I am dubious at this delivery method. I don't see how Sculptra can absorb into the area and be as effective as an injection. How can you control where the filler goes? Please advise.

As others have noted, this application of Sculptra is somewhat experimental.  Sculptra is a great product for enhancing facial volume, but I cannot recommend the micro-needling approach at this time.

This method won't give as much improvement as a combination approach. Fillers, lasers, and microneedling/PRP can improve under the eyes. My patients try to get non surgical treatments to avoid surgery. We use PRP and stem cells there often. I suggest consulting with an expert to develop a treatment plan best suited for your short and long term goals. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question. To date there are no studies that have looked at this or assessed its effect. I doubt it will result in a complication. It will be difficult to assess whether the addition of the Sculptra improved the results or whether the improvement achieved was due to the microneedling procedure by itself. Even though there is at least one study to show that the sculptra (PLLA) granules did penetrate the skin after microneedling and topical application, the quantity and effect of such purported penetration has never been shown to be effective (yet).  Collagen induction via Sculptra lasts for years and if there are nodules formed from excessive collagen production they will be difficult to impossible to dissolve, especially on the lower eyelid.  In my opinion, the use of Sculptra in this way should be considered experimental and inappropriate to offer in the clinical setting unless the patient is fully informed and part of a formal study.
