Could temporary veneers cause a tooth ache at night when I lie down without a more serious underlying reason?

That's a strange situation. Typically, a minimal amount of tooth structure is removed for veneers. It's unusual to have discomfort after veneer preps are done. If it's at the gum line, it's possible the temporary veneers aren't trimmed enough and are causing pressure or rubbing at the gums. Without photos or xrays, it's impossible to really say what's going on, but you should have your dentist evaluate the area.

new veneers even if temporary, may mean and new bite and sometimes that can take a while to get used to. I would recommend you bring it to your dentists attention as soon as possible so a bite assessment can be made. It’s possible to have a toothache (or jaw ache) without any other reasons other than a new bite!
