I've read about patients undergoing breathing or valve problems when shifting, rapsing, or removing bone matter. Is there a different in risk between osteotomies and hump removal? How can breathing be preserved when bone is altered or a nasal tip is narrowed?

This appears to be in the area of the soft tissue facet. I would be very, very surprised if taping did this. In most cases, this will improve as you heal. If not, a small cartilage graft or dermal filler will usually fill in the area of the dent with a nice improvement. I hope this information...
In your situation, it's usually not about reducing the nostril size, but instead improving the length of the columella, the cartilage in the midline of the nose. There are grafts that can be placed to create a better relationship between the two. Be sure to see an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon...
