There certainly appears to be some damage to the areolar skin due to problems with blood supply. The early question is always whether or not the damage is superficial or full thickness. Either way, this will eventually heal with good wound care. If it is full thickness, it will take much longer.

I think your surgeon is write and it will heal. This is one of the most common things that happens after a periareolar scar with a vertical component. I don't know what operation you had so I can't comment any more than that. However, it doesn't look that bad and I suspect it will heal completely, with the right aftercare.

I believe that if you follow good wound care with frequent follow ups with your Plastic Surgeon this may heal up acceptably.  It is too early to tell at this time.Good luck to you.  Keep up with frequent washing of the wound if your doctor recommends this.Frank Rieger M.D. Tampa Plastic Surgeon
