I have spina bifida, can I still get a BBL?

Question

I had spinal surgery when I was 2 to help compromise my spina bifida. I have an uneven butt from it and I’m worried that it could effect my nervous system. Could I get a BBL?

Hello, thank you for your question. I recommend that you discuss this through email Skype or in-person with a board certified plastic surgeon for proper evaluation. Spinal bifida comes in many forms; you do not want to run the risk of damaging nerves in the area so your PS will require approval from the specialist treating your spinal bifida issues.

it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. You might need a clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

Depending on how back your asymmetry is, a BBL may not give you the result that you want. It is best to see a board certified PS in your area to discuss your specific situation to see if your expectations are realistic and if there is any concern for your spina bifida.

You'll want to find and consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can examine the area appropriately to determine your candidacy for the procedure.The optimal BBL outcomes are achieved with: 1) use of VASER liposuction to harvest the fat, 2) a closed looped system such as Puregraft to process the fat, and 3) strategic micro-packet transplant technique. These three processes have demonstrated over 95% fat graft take. This means that your results will be stable as long as you maintain your weight. As an official VASER trainer, I am routinely referred unhappy BBL patients. One of the most common reasons for disgruntled BBL patients is that patients are not able to accurately communicate their desired buttocks goals to their surgeons.  A buttocks assessment tool can be an invaluable tool to communicate to your surgeon the exact buttocks size and shape you are desiring. A Skype or FaceTime consultation with a BBL specialist can help you get an accurate recommendation and pricing.

Having a BBL in your situation may be tricky and may not be appropriate. Spina bifida is a condition that has quite a range of levels of spinal exposure at birth. There are also different ways of correcting this surgically. If this is something that is very important for you and then consider talking to plastic surgeons in person and getting appropriate studies and opinions. The only opinion that matters is the surgeon you consult with and choose to do the procedure. I would say at a minimum radiographic evaluation of what covers your spinal cord would be necessary. This could include an MRI. After that it’s up to their discretion and judgment of the surgeon if they proceed and if so if they modify the procedure to protect your spinal cord.It would make sense to confirm that you’re a good candidate for this procedure and that the benefit from this would be justified in taking some risk. For someone who’s not a good candidate and will not have a great outcome it doesn’t make sense but for some it could.Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
