Thanks for your question. At my practice, a patient's hemoglobin needs to be at a 12 or higher. Hope this helps. Make sure to always consult with a board certified plastic surgeon. Take care, Moises Salama MD, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
Dear Tough8129,every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. Your lab results should be within normal limits prior to surgery. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
Minimum safe levels would be hematocrit of 12 and a hemoglobin of 36. Board-certified plastic surgeons are trained that a minimum of 10 and 30 are required for reconstruction procedures on severely ill and debilitated patients, however liposuction with a BBL is elective, and as such the patient should be in very good health, and not have to require a “cell saver”, or a blood transfusion after undergoing an elective cosmetic surgery. These recommendations are not “my opinion”, but basic good, sound medicine. Patients can’t easily increase their hemoglobin and hematocrit to safe levels preoperatively utilizing iron sulfate supplements, vitamin C , Vit B 6&12, and multivitamin supplementation preoperatively, and adhering to a very strict healthy diet. Good luck & best wishes.
In order to be a good candidate for surgery your hemoglobin level should be within normal range.Best,Mats Hagstrom MD
