Question

I had lower blepharoplasty 7 weeks ago, my eyelid started to became darker (between purple and brown) after week 3, what shall I do? The doctor said he never saw something like that before.. Thanks

Hi Entauro.  For medium skin types that have bad bruising after injection and surgical procedures (especially around the eyes), there is a condition called hemosiderin staining that can develop.  It is essentially a long term bruise that develops after severe trauma.To effectively remove it we use q-switched laser treatments.  Usually 1-3 visits will do the trick. Did you have a lot of bruising?  If you did the lid can stay pretty purple for a while.  However, if it looked good until 3 weeks post-op it is most likely some hyperpigmentation which can occur in darker skin types.  It will eventually fade.  Some hydroquinone creams, and Intense Pulsed light treatments can also help. No sun!

Given the photo and your story, this likely represents hyperpigmentation as a reaction to the surgery and subsequent inflammation. This usually resolves on its own, but it's important to take measures to prevent it from worsening. I recommend dark sunglasses and at this point in the healing you can also use sun block to prevent further sun exposure. If it is worsening, bring the issue up to your doctor, as topical medications and treatments such as hydroquinone can be very helpful.

Thank you for sharing your case. Make sure to wear sunglasses outdoors to avoid hyperpigmentation as you heal.  Arnica is an herbal supplement that may help you to heal faster.  Ask your surgeon if this is a good option for you.  Good luck!
